Mikel Arteta slams ‘unacceptable’ Arsenal after defeat to Crystal Palace as Gunners fan calls for Patrick Vieira to take charge

Mikel Arteta blasted Arsenal’s ‘unacceptable’ performance in their resounding Premier League defeat at Crystal Palace.

The Gunners suffered a blow in their pursuit of a place in the top four and Champions League football as they lost 3-0 at Selhurst Park.

Manager Arteta has no complaints about the way the result panned out but has plenty of issues with the way his team played.

He told Sky Sports after the match: “First, congratulations to Crystal Palace for the game they played.

“I think we made it impossible for ourselves, the way we competed. We talked about that before the game – you have to compete at this ground, you have to be physical, you have to win first and second balls, win the challenges and then you earn the right to play.

“We earned it a little bit but we were really poor, we were really inconsistent on the ball, giving the ball away time after time.

“At that level it’s unacceptable so today we have to accept that we were nowhere near our level, especially in the first half and I apologise to our supporters…”

The result saw Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira get one over on his former club as Palace went up to ninth in the Premier League table.

Vieira has enjoyed a very productive first season as Palace boss having guided them to the FA Cup semi-finals and putting them in a great position to achieve their best ever Premier League finish.

He’s impressing fans from his former club, with Arsenal supporter Josh saying telling talkSPORT after the game that he’d like to see Vieira take the hotseat at the Emirates Stadium.

Asked by Sports Bar co-host Jermaine Pennant if he wanted Vieira to replace Arteta if Arsenal didn’t finish in the top four, Josh said: “I said probably back in December, I actually said ‘Vieira in’ and [talkSPORT host] Jamie [O’Hara] laughed me out of the situation.

“I wanted Vieira before Arteta… he comes across as such a guy and look at how he’s transformed this Palace team.

“He’s such a character, he’s probably everything Arsenal are lacking in terms of leadership and I think he’d get these young boys playing.

“I would’ve always wanted Vieira in the first place.”
